It’s Black Music Month | 15 Songs to Empower Black Women #PlaylistIncluded

Black Music Month Lisa Live Well

It’s June and Black Music Month. Yeah, that’s a thing. On this day in 1979, Jimmy Carter decreed the holiday and I am here for it. Music is such a huge part of who we are and there is a song for every way we want to feel. Black music is the cornerstone of all American music… actually, black music is THE American music. Rock, Country, Jazz, Hip Hop, House, and R&B all have their roots in Melaninated people’s artistry. And the culture built around that music is exported to every corner of the globe. I will never forget being in a night club in Paris, hearing Desiigner’s Panda and watching the crowd loose it like I was in a hip hop club back in Atlanta. I knew the music traveled but the song was new at the time and the French, who spoke no English to help me with directions earlier that day, were claiming they had “Broads in Atlanta”. I joyously squealed and join the chorus of voices at “Twistin’ dope, lean, and the Fanta”… It was a moment of connection…over misogyny and drugs but a connection no less.  The point is I love music, I am inspired and empowered by the right song at the right moment.
